Sailing – The History And The Science Behind It
Posted in: Sail Boats & Sailing
For centuries man searched for a way which would provide him easier mobility and faster means of fishing, hunting etc. It was then that sailing was discovered. Today, sailing does a lot more than provide increased mobility. It is an exciting form or recreation and exercise. There are millions of sailing enthusiasts in the world today who spend a lot of their time trying to master the skills of maneuvering the sailboat in all kinds of sea conditions. And there are millions more who want to join in. But how does a sail boat move ahead? How did it originate? There are a lot of questions but no answers.
The Origin And Development
Though the first official reference about sailing in history books comes in the age of sail, sailing was said to have originated much earlier than that. The great stones of the pyramids were moved from Aswan to Giza with the help of sailing ships. Man was able to move about the 1000 islands of Polynesia thanks to sailing. But the real golden age of sailing started with the 15th century. It was in this time that the real commercial use of sailing began. Trade and commerce reached an all time high thanks to sailing. Humans began migrating to all corners of the world and their carrier was the strong and sturdy sailed ship, which battled many a storm and harsh weather conditions.
The Principle Behind Sailing
Sailing is the art of controlling the sailboat over the water surface. The energy required to drive the sailboat ahead is harnessed by tweaking the relative movement of wind speed and water speed. Hence, you will find that in days of calm when there is no difference in the speed and direction of wind and water, the sailboat simply drifts ahead. But on days when there is energy to be tapped, the sailboat extracts it with the help of the sail in the air and the hull in the water. Airflow is setup by the motion of the boat and this is used by the sail, which is nothing but an airfoil. If the wind alone was used to propel the sail, then it would simply drift ahead in the direction of the wind. Hence, a propelling medium like the keel or the hull is used.
Advancement
There were a lot more techniques applied later on to improve the performance of sails and to reduce the dependence on weather and wind conditions. The result was the development of vessels like the wind turbine boat and the autogiro boat. Nevertheless, of course, the thrill of controlling a sailboat through raw wind is unbeatable.

How To Make Sailing More Enjoyable?
If you are one of those people who like to enjoy their summers sailing on your own, here are some tips for you along with some useful hints. These tips will definitely help you in making your sailing holidays more enjoyable. First of all avoid direct sunlight during summer, as it may be dangerous so always use sun tent when your sailing boat is anchored at shore.
Take All Safety Precautions
Whenever you are sailing put on your soft boat shoes. These will help you in two ways. First, it will protect your feet while sailing; the second benefit is that it will prevent the deck surface from being damaged. If there is no sufficient cause then you should not go to walk on the deck. Be careful all the time when you are on board and do not forget to put on your life belt. Similarly, if there are children accompanying you then make sure that all of them have life vests on.
How to Use an Electric Anchor Winch?
One more important tip on sailing is that you should learn to use the electric anchor winch in an appropriate manner. Although the electric anchor winch is designed for your comfort yet incautious use may create troubles instead. For example, electric anchor winch consumes a good deal of energy thereby exhausting the service battery. To prevent this from happening it is better to operate the motor at 1200 to 1500 RPM in neutral. It is also advisable to manually lower the anchor.
You should not drop papers and napkins in the bowl of toilet because pumps cannot dissolve these things. Instead, you should carry plastic bags with you. You should also be careful at the time of refilling of water tank or fuel tank. The situation becomes difficult to handle whether you mix the fuel in water tank or water in the fuel tank. When the gas stove is not in use, do not forget to turn off the main switch of the gas bottle.
Keep Your Eyes On Hour Counter
If you do not want to face the unpleasant situation a sailboat in the sea without fuel is left with you then you should always watch the hour counter. It will tell you how much fuel there is, but the fuel gauge may create problems because it is not always reliable. Finally, show to the world that you care for others and that you are an environment friendly person. You can do so simply by not throwing any thing into the sea that is responsible for pollution such as plastic bags and similar wastes. Instead, it is better to remove the waste material from your sailboat on your water and not empty it into the water.
